When it comes to self storage, convenience makes most of the difference. The easiest option for homeowners and small businesses alike is drive-up self storage, and there is a good reason it stays the most popular choice at our facility.

At Hometown Storage in Oakwood GA, our drive-up units give you a hassle-free way to store and reach your belongings. The simplest way to think about one is as an extra garage you can count on all year. Here is how they work, who they suit best, and how to get the most out of one.

What is a drive-up storage unit?

A drive-up unit is a ground-level storage unit you can pull a vehicle right up to. You back up to the door, roll it up, and load straight out of your car, truck, or trailer.

There is no hallway to walk down, no elevator to wait for, and no cart to load and unload twice. The door is an exterior roll-up, usually wide enough to back a trailer to, and the unit opens directly onto the drive.

Every unit at our Oakwood facility is on the ground floor, drive-up and climate controlled alike. That is worth knowing because at a lot of facilities the ground floor units are the ones that go first.

Why is drive-up storage easier than indoor storage?

It removes the carrying, which is where the time and the effort actually go.

With an indoor unit, every trip means parking, unloading onto a cart, navigating a corridor, and doing the whole thing again in reverse. It adds up quickly, and it adds up the most on the days you are already tired.

A drive-up unit collapses that into one step. Park, open, load. For anyone juggling a weekend schedule, that difference decides whether you actually get the job done Saturday morning or put it off another week.

It matters even more for heavy and awkward things. Large furniture, appliances, tool chests, and bulk boxes are difficult to move any distance and worse through a narrow corridor. With drive-up access you are moving them a few feet rather than a few hundred.

Can you really use a storage unit as a second garage?

Yes, and it is the most common way our Oakwood customers use them.

A drive-up unit is an affordable way to keep the things you use a few times a year but still want nearby and easy to grab. It gives your actual garage back for parking a car, running a project, or simply walking through without turning sideways.

September is when this gets obvious around here. Lawn equipment is winding down for the year, holiday decorations are about to come out, and hunting and football season gear is coming off the shelf. That seasonal rotation is precisely what a drive-up unit handles well, because you are pulling in and out repeatedly and every trip is quick.

What do people store in drive-up units around Oakwood?

Mostly the practical overflow of a full household or a working business.

Lawn equipment and garden tools are near the top of the list, along with sports gear, camping equipment, bikes, and outdoor toys. Holiday decorations are a category of their own, since they are bulky, seasonal, and needed on a predictable schedule.

On the business side, contractors and small business owners store inventory, tools, materials, and equipment. Household furniture during a move or renovation is common too, as is the general overflow that accumulates when a growing family runs out of closet.

The common thread is that these items are durable, they are bulky, and you want to reach them without ceremony.

Who is drive-up storage best for?

Four groups get the most out of it.

Homeowners running out of garage. The second garage use case, and the largest group by far.

Anyone in the middle of a move or renovation. Short-term storage where you are loading and unloading in volume, and where every step you can remove is worth something. We have U-Haul rentals here on site as well, which makes the whole thing one stop.

Contractors and small business owners. If you are pulling tools or inventory at the start of a workday, you cannot afford a corridor and an elevator. Drive-up access and a trailer-friendly approach matter. We also have work truck and trailer parking if the vehicle itself needs somewhere to sit.

Anyone storing heavy or awkward items. Appliances, furniture, equipment, and anything you would rather not carry twice.

What size drive-up unit do you need?

Bigger than people first guess, though not by as much as they fear.

As a rough guide, a 5x10 handles the contents of a small bedroom or a closet cleanout with a little furniture. A 10x10 covers about a one-bedroom apartment, or a full garage worth of lawn equipment and seasonal bins. A 10x15 handles roughly a two-bedroom home, and a 10x20 is about a three-bedroom home and comes out close to a one-car garage in footprint.

Two things throw the estimate off. People forget that stacking height counts, so a unit holds considerably more than the floor plan suggests. And people forget to leave a walkway, which they always end up wishing they had.

The honest answer is that a size chart only gets you close. We keep a show unit available for exactly this reason, so you can stand in the space and see it before committing. It takes five minutes and it settles the question better than any guide.

What should you not put in a drive-up unit?

Anything sensitive to heat and humidity.

A drive-up unit opens to the outdoors, so it follows the weather. That is completely fine for tools, outdoor equipment, plastic bins, and most furniture. It is not the right home for electronics, antiques, photographs, documents, musical instruments, or anything upholstered that will be stored through a Georgia summer.

For those, a climate controlled unit is worth the difference, and we cover exactly where that line falls in our post on climate controlled versus drive-up storage. Short version: durable goods and short stays lean drive-up, sensitive items and long stays lean climate controlled.

One rule applies to both. Never store anything damp. A closed unit will not dry it out.

How do you pack a drive-up unit so you can still get to things?

Leave a center aisle, and put the things you will want soonest closest to the door.

The mistake almost everyone makes is loading front to back until the unit is full, which means the first thing you need in November is behind everything you loaded in September. A narrow walkway down the middle costs you a bit of space and saves you every single visit after that.

Put heavy and sturdy items on the bottom, lighter boxes on top, and keep a few inches between your contents and the walls so air can move. Label boxes on the side rather than the top, since sides are what you can read once things are stacked.

If you are rotating seasonal items, keep them in one zone near the door instead of scattered through the unit. Holiday decorations, lawn equipment, and sports gear all come and go on a schedule, and grouping them turns a thirty minute dig into a two minute stop.

What security comes with a drive-up unit?

The same protection as everything else on the property.

Our facility is fully fenced with keypad-controlled gated entry, security cameras, and an on-site manager during office hours. Gate access runs [ACCESS HOURS], so you can get to your unit around a work schedule rather than ours.

Every new rental also includes a free disc lock, which is a meaningful detail. Disc locks are far harder to defeat than a standard padlock, and most facilities sell you one rather than including it.

Where can you rent drive-up storage near Oakwood and Gainesville?

Right here, and we are locally owned, which shapes how this goes.

Hometown Storage sits in Oakwood, convenient to Gainesville, Mundy Mill, Lake Lanier, and the University of North Georgia. Every unit is ground floor, with drive-up and climate controlled options, plus RV, boat, work truck, and trailer parking and U-Haul rentals on site.

Standard units come with a 12-month rate guarantee, so the rate you sign up at is the rate you keep for a full year. Storage prices around here have a way of climbing a few months in, and that is not how we operate.

If you are not sure which size fits or whether drive-up is the right call, come by during office hours. We will walk you through the show unit and give you a straight answer, even when the answer is the smaller unit.
