Hometown Storage is a U-Haul Neighborhood Dealer, so you can pick up a moving truck or trailer at the same Oakwood facility where you store your things. If you're moving anywhere around Oakwood, Gainesville, Mundy Mill, or the Lake Lanier area, that turns moving day into one address instead of three.

We're a locally owned facility at 3625 McEver Rd, and U-Haul rentals run right out of our office. Here's what you can rent, how to reserve it, how to choose the right size, and how to plan a move that uses a truck and a storage unit together.

What U-Haul rentals can you get at Hometown Storage?

You can rent U-Haul moving trucks, trailers, and towing equipment from us. Reservations and pricing run through U-Haul's system, and our team handles the pickup and return here in Oakwood.

U-Haul's fleet runs from pickup trucks and cargo vans for small jobs up to large moving trucks for a full house. Equipment moves between U-Haul locations based on demand, so what's on our lot changes from week to week. The easiest way to make sure the truck you want is waiting for you is to reserve it ahead of time with Hometown Storage selected as your pickup location.

How do you reserve a U-Haul truck in Oakwood?

Reserve online at uhaul.com and choose Hometown Storage at 3625 McEver Rd in Oakwood as your pickup spot, or call our office at (470) 703-0223 and we'll help you set it up. You'll pick a date, a truck size, and whether you're keeping the move local or going one way.

An in-town rental comes back to us when you're done. A one-way rental gets dropped at a U-Haul location near where you're headed, which makes sense if you're relocating out of Hall County or moving a student across the state.

Weekends and the last few days of the month tend to be the busiest times for moving trucks. If your move lands on one of those, book as early as you can.

You'll pick up and return your truck during our office hours: Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm, Saturday from 9am to 1pm, and Sunday from 12pm to 4pm. Bring a valid driver's license and plan on a few minutes at the counter to walk through the truck with our team.

What size moving truck do you need?

Start with how many bedrooms you're moving. U-Haul's own guidance puts a 10-foot truck at a studio or one-bedroom apartment, a 15-foot truck at one to two bedrooms, a 20-foot truck at two to three bedrooms, and a 26-foot truck at a three to four bedroom home. Pickups and cargo vans are for a few pieces of furniture or a dorm room.

If you're going straight into storage, it helps to size the truck and the unit together. A rough rule of thumb: A 10x10 storage unit holds about a one-bedroom apartment, which lines up with a 10-foot or 15-foot truck. A 10x15 unit holds about a two-bedroom home, a good match for a 15-foot or 20-foot truck. A 10x20 unit holds about a three-bedroom home or the contents of a one-car garage, which usually calls for a 20-foot or 26-foot truck.

Big furniture or a garage full of tools can push you up a size. When you're torn between two trucks, go bigger: a second trip costs more than the difference. Our size calculator and our guide to choosing the right storage unit size can help you work out the unit side.

Why rent your truck where you store?

Because it takes most of the driving out of moving day. The usual move with a separate truck rental means picking up the truck across town, loading at home, driving to a storage facility somewhere else, unloading, and then driving back to return the truck.

At Hometown Storage those last three stops are the same place. Pick up the truck here, load at your house, come back and unload into your unit, and drop the keys at the office. For our neighbors in Mundy Mill and around Oakwood, the whole loop can stay close to home.

It also means one local team knows your whole move. If your closing date shifts or you need a bigger unit halfway through the day, you make one call, not two.

How does drive-up storage make unloading easier?

You back the truck right up to your unit door and carry things a few feet instead of down a hallway. Every unit at Hometown Storage is on the ground floor, so there are no stairs or elevators whichever type you choose. Our post on the benefits of drive-up self storage covers packing and loading a drive-up unit in detail, and if you're deciding between drive-up and climate-controlled, start with our climate-controlled vs drive-up comparison.

How should you plan moving day around truck and gate hours?

Plan the truck around office hours and the unloading around gate hours. Truck pickup and return happen while the office is open, but the gate is open every day from 5am to midnight, so you're not racing the clock to get your things into the unit.

A simple local plan: rent your storage unit a day or two ahead, so your gate code and unit are ready before the truck is. Pick up the truck in the morning, load at home, and unload into your unit in the afternoon. Check the return time on your rental agreement so you know when the truck is due back, and return it during office hours.

Security runs around the clock even when the gate is closed. The facility is fully fenced with keypad-controlled entry, and our cameras record 24/7. Our on-site manager is here during office hours if you need a hand finding your unit or have a question about the truck.

Is a trailer a better fit than a truck?

It can be, if you have a vehicle that can tow and your load is on the smaller side. A trailer lets you drive your own car or pickup, which is handy for a dorm move, a few pieces of furniture, or a load of tools and equipment. U-Haul asks about your vehicle when you reserve to make sure it can safely pull the trailer you pick, and your vehicle needs a hitch that matches.

If you already own a trailer and just need somewhere to keep it, that's a different service.

Hometown Storage has parking for trailers, work trucks, boats, and RVs, so your driveway doesn't have to double as a lot. Our post on boat and RV storage near Lake Lanier walks through vehicle parking in more detail.

Who rents a truck and a storage unit at the same time?

Mostly people who are between places. A home sale closes before the new house is ready, a family is downsizing and needs time to sort through what stays, or someone is relocating to the Gainesville area for work and needs a landing spot for their furniture while they find a rental.

We also see University of North Georgia students packing up at the end of a semester, homeowners clearing rooms before a remodel, lake house owners around Lake Lanier, and local contractors who need a truck for the big haul and a unit for tools and inventory.

What else should you know before you rent?

Standard rates carry a 12-month rate guarantee, every new rental comes with a free disc lock, and rentals are month to month, which fits a move without a firm end date. Want to see a unit first? Walk through our show unit during office hours, call us at (470) 703-0223, or reserve your truck and unit online.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to rent a storage unit to rent a U-Haul from Hometown Storage? No. You can rent a U-Haul truck or trailer from us whether or not you store with us. If you do need a unit, it's easy to set both up at the same time, and our team can help you match the truck size to the unit size.

Can I unload into my unit after the office closes? Yes. The gate is open every day from 5am to midnight, and your gate code works any time during those hours. Truck pickup and returns happen during office hours, so plan to have the truck back while the office is open and use the extra gate hours for unloading.

Where do I return a one-way U-Haul rental? U-Haul assigns the drop-off location for a one-way rental when you reserve, based on where you're headed. If you're moving into the Oakwood area, you can request Hometown Storage as your drop-off spot when you book, which works well if you're renting a storage unit here too.

What size truck do I need to fill a 10x10 storage unit? A 10-foot or 15-foot truck usually covers a 10x10 unit, which holds about the contents of a one-bedroom apartment. If you have oversized furniture or a lot of boxes, the 15-foot truck gives you room to spare. For a 10x15 or 10x20 unit, look at a 20-foot or 26-foot truck.

How far ahead should I reserve a U-Haul in Oakwood? Reserve as early as you know your move date, especially for a weekend or the end of the month, since those are the busiest times for moving trucks. An early reservation is the best way to make sure the size you want is waiting at our Oakwood location.
